Music is a part of how we communicate. We use music to connect to our cultures, each other, and ourselves. We hear music every day, in the sounds of nature, on the radio, and everywhere. Every person deserves the opportunity to experience the connections that music provides, and to learn how to create those connections for themselves. When those connections are used properly, the world can be made a better place for everyone.
My philosophy of education can be summed up in three words: Communication, Creativity, and Charity.
We can use music for Communication of world cultures, socio-economic values, or a moment of emotional intensity. While some of these aspects may be intuitive to individual students, music education offers all students a gateway to learn about each aspect together.
Creativity is a fundamental part of making music. Every student is expressing their own creativity through interpretation of existing music or composition of new works.
In an ensemble, musicians work together to create an image of beauty. In the classroom, students should learn how to apply that same skill to the world. The best way to make the world an image of beauty is by displaying Charity, a genuine effort of goodwill to all.
